Motorcycle Courier Career

Your journey to becoming a Proper Delivery courier starts here!

Never ridden a motorcycle or scooter before? No problem!

Proper Delivery scooter couriers at Brighton marina

Starting a career as a motorcycle courier can seem complicated when you’re completely new to bikes. That’s why we’ve created this step-by-step guide to help you get started, from applying for your first provisional licence to finding your first delivery scooter.

At Proper Delivery, we want to help new riders get on the road safely, legally and affordably.

Follow our guide below to start your journey towards becoming a delivery courier!

Step 1

Apply for Your UK Provisional Licence

Before you can begin learning to ride a motorcycle or scooter on public roads, you’ll generally need a valid UK provisional driving licence with the appropriate motorcycle entitlement.

If you don’t already have a provisional licence, you can apply through the official DVLA website.

Apply for your provisional licence

Once your provisional licence arrives, you can move on to preparing for your motorcycle theory test.

Step 2

Learn the Highway Code and Prepare for Your Theory Test

Before riding on the road, it’s important to understand the rules, signs and responsibilities that come with riding a motorcycle.

Start learning the Highway Code and familiarise yourself with motorcycle-specific road safety questions.

We recommend downloading a theory test training app to help you prepare.

Book Your Motorcycle Theory Test

When you’re ready, book your motorcycle theory test through the official GOV.UK website.

Book your test here:

Important information before booking:

You must have lived in England, Scotland or Wales for at least 185 days in the 12 months before your theory or driving test.

The motorcycle theory test currently costs £23.

Always check the official booking website for the latest eligibility requirements and fees.

You do not need to pass a theory test before taking CBT. Theory preparation helps you build road knowledge; passing the motorcycle theory test is required before your full motorcycle practical test.

Step 3

Complete Your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

Your next step is to complete your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).

CBT is a training course that most new riders must complete before riding a moped or motorcycle on public roads.

It teaches you the essential skills needed to ride safely while you practise towards your full motorcycle licence.

CBT is not a traditional pass-or-fail test. Your instructor will assess your riding and provide training until you meet the required standard.

What Can You Ride After CBT?

Subject to the relevant licence and vehicle requirements, you can ride:

From age 16: A moped up to 50cc.

From age 17: A motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc, with a maximum power output of 11kW.

You must display L plates on the front and rear, and you cannot carry a passenger.

A CBT certificate generally lasts for two years. You must pass the relevant full motorcycle test within that period or stop riding under your CBT entitlement until you meet the requirements to ride again.

Step 4

Arrange the Correct Delivery Insurance

Once you’ve completed your CBT, you’ll need to consider insurance before starting delivery work.

Ordinary motorcycle insurance is not enough for paid delivery work.

You must arrange insurance that specifically covers Hire & Reward business use for delivering hot food, and make sure it covers your vehicle, licence status and intended type of work.

Depending on your circumstances, you may need specialist fast-food delivery insurance.

Insurance Providers Worth Comparing

We recommend obtaining quotes from the following specialist providers:

1. INSHUR

2. Zego

3. Lexham

Visit Lexham

Compare quotes carefully, as prices and eligibility can vary depending on your age, experience, motorcycle, location and delivery requirements.

Before purchasing a policy, confirm that it covers your exact circumstances, including riding on a CBT if applicable and delivering orders for payment.

Step 5

Choose Your First Delivery Scooter

Now comes the exciting part: choosing your first scooter!

For delivery work, we recommend considering reliable, economical scooters that are practical for riding around busy towns and cities.

Our Recommended 125cc Scooters

Honda PCX 125

A popular choice for everyday commuting and urban delivery work, with a practical design and economical engine.

Yamaha NMAX 125

A compact scooter worth considering for riders who need something manoeuvrable for busy streets and frequent stops.

Honda Forza 125

A more touring-oriented scooter with additional weather protection and a comfortable riding position.

Yamaha XMAX 125

Another option for riders who want a larger scooter with more touring-oriented styling and comfort.

What Should You Look For?

When choosing a scooter for delivery work, consider:

Fuel economy and running costs.

Reliability and servicing expenses.

Comfortable riding position.

Storage space for essential equipment.

Suitability for carrying a delivery bag.

Insurance costs.

Your height and comfort when riding.

Whether the scooter meets the requirements of your licence.

Our advice: Don’t spend more than you need to on your first scooter. Get some experience, understand your running costs and upgrade later if your delivery work justifies it.

Remember that you must have the appropriate licence entitlement, CBT or full licence, insurance and other required documentation before riding on public roads.

Step 6

Rent a Scooter Instead of Buying One

Not everyone wants to purchase a motorcycle straight away.

Renting can be an alternative if you want to get started without paying the full purchase price of a scooter upfront.

Here are two local options to explore in Brighton.

Option 1: Nois Motos – Brighton

A local motorcycle business worth contacting about scooter rental.

Address: 71 Beaconsfield Road, Brighton, BN1 4QJ

Message Nois Motos on WhatsApp

Advertised rental price: From £75 per week.

Contact them directly to check availability, delivery-work eligibility and the documents required to rent a scooter.

Option 2: Rental Bikes Brighton

Another option to explore if you’re looking to rent a motorcycle or scooter in Brighton.

Visit Rental Bikes Brighton

Advertised rental price: From £85 per week.

Contact the rental company to confirm which scooters are available for food delivery and whether the rental agreement permits commercial use.

Important Before Renting

Always check whether the rental price includes insurance, servicing, breakdown assistance and permission to undertake paid deliveries.

You must also make sure that any insurance provided covers Hire & Reward food delivery. Do not assume that ordinary rental insurance is sufficient.

Step 7

Get Ready to Start Your Courier Career!

Once you’ve completed your training and arranged a suitable scooter and insurance, you can start preparing to work as a delivery courier.

Before accepting your first delivery, make sure you have:

The correct driving licence and motorcycle entitlement.

A valid CBT certificate or the appropriate full motorcycle licence.

Suitable Hire & Reward insurance for hot-food delivery.

A roadworthy, properly taxed and legally compliant scooter.

A suitable smartphone with mobile data.

A thermal delivery bag.

Any other equipment required by your delivery company.

The legal right to work in the UK and any additional documents required by the company you work with.

You should also plan for fuel, maintenance, tyres, insurance and other running costs when working out how much you could earn.
